View of Ischia

Oswald Achenbach, 1894, oil on canvas, cm 100x77

(Düsseldorf 1827 – Düsseldorf 1905)
A leading figure of the Düsseldorf School, Oswald Achenbach was one of the most prominent European landscape painters of the late 19th century. Alongside his elder brother Andreas, a renowned artist in his own right, he dominated the genre in Germany. This painting stems from his stays in Ischia, which began in July 1871 during the fourth of his seven Italian journeys. Although Achenbach depicted the view of the eastern coast facing the Aragonese Castle in several variations, this 1894 canvas belongs to his late period, characterized by filling the pictorial space with lively genre scenes. The work records a popular festivity along the village streets, focusing on islanders dancing in the foreground during a warm summer evening. Achenbach renders the scene with a signature peaceful atmosphere, using the warm yellow glow of candles to pierce the darkness and heighten the tranquil charm of the celebration.
