Trained in Maiori under Gaetano Capone and subsequently in Naples, Raffaele D’Amato inherited the teachings of Morelli, becoming part of a realist movement that was often oleographic, yet also capable of producing an attentive psychological analysis. In this nocturne, dating to around 1920, the artist renewed his visual language, decisively moving beyond the conventions of genre painting following a long creative crisis. The work presents itself as a modern luminous meditation through decidedly post-impressionist tones: a kind of “lunar” allegory that appears to conclude the artist’s journey.
