Born in Torraca and trained at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples under Vincenzo Volpe and Michele Cammarano, Biagio Mercadante reveals the complexity of his personal style in this 1925 work. Although vestiges of his Verist training remain evident, the painting is already informed by more advanced artistic currents. The structure moves away from the sensory fluidity of the Michetti tradition toward a tense and peremptory relationship between pictorial masses. The work demonstrates Mercadante's ability to draw freely from 19th-century tradition, reimagining it through the Novecento climate in a formal balance that anticipates his later development toward a more synthetic and international figurative culture.
