Ravello

Trained in Maiori at the studio of his uncle Gaetano Capone and subsequently at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts, Angelo Della Mura here depicts the church of Santa Maria a Gradillo in Ravello. The work is defined by a sharp, analytical draftsmanship, a direct legacy of Capone’s teaching. The precision of the architectural details reflects an observation of reality understood as an acceptance of objective data, consistent with the positivist culture of the second half of the 19th century. In this view of an ancient Ravello, the monuments surrounded by nature are recorded with impartial objectivity. There emerges a sensitivity toward a landscape understood as "other than oneself": an entity captured on a splendid morning in its simple and independent existence.
