The Collegiate Church of Maiori

Trained in Maiori at the studio of his uncle Gaetano Capone and later at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts, Angelo Della Mura organizes this 1891 urban view through a rigorous geometric arrangement. The observation of reality, a cornerstone of his training, is transformed here into an attempt at spatial synthesis: the overlapping volumes of the houses and the complex of the Collegiate Church create a verticality that approaches abstraction. As seen in the artist's other views, analytical precision does not indulge in the descriptive, instead elevating a formal exercise, anticipating a more modern compositional sensibility.
