Born in Puglia, Francesco Galante trained at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples under Michele Cammarano and Vincenzo Volpe. In the 1930s, the artist developed a distinct preference for an intimate atmosphere that preceded his "Novecento" shift, which he pursued in parallel with the research of his friend Luigi Crisconio. Similar to The Sisters (entry 54), in this canvas dating from around 1934, Galante confirms his devotion to subtle luminous effects, revealing the persistence of a pictorial sensitivity that skillfully combines the vibration of light with the volumetric synthesis of form.
