Trained at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts under Gioacchino Toma and Stanislao Lista, Vincenzo Irolli devoted himself to portraiture and genre themes drawn from the observation of daily life. While his early works reflect the violent and luminous effects of the Spanish painting of Fortuny and Martín Rico—akin to the research of Rubens Santoro (entry 19)—his 20th-century production reached a more fluid and rapid language. In this painting, Irolli captures the individuality of the figures through a brushwork that is both agitated and fibrous, establishing a confident relationship between the subject and the background, closely linked to the surrounding atmospheric environment.
