Young girl 2
Clemente Tafuri, oil on small panel, cm 35x25
(Salerno 1903 – Genoa Pegli 1971)
The work belongs to the most renowned production of Clemente Tafuri, dating back to the 1960s, a period in which the artist devoted himself with extraordinary critical and commercial success to genre painting of immediate impact. In this small panel, the distinctive features of his mature style are fully displayed and applied here to the genre of portraiture: the use of vibrant tones and a technique applied in characteristic "tufts" of chromatic filaments, which lend the young girl's profile a powerful inner vitality. Much like Innocent Games (entry 08), the canvas reveals a technique that is only seemingly "facile," rich in a dense pictorial matter that enhances the expressive qualities and communicative impact of the face.
